It's a sad day when an icon like Maila Nurmi (Vampira) passes on. She had just had a movie released about her, a sort of documentary which she also starred in. I have loved this woman's original style since I first saw Plan 9. True she did sort of base of looks a bit off of Charles Addams cartoons (Morticia) in the New Yorker, she incorporated her unique flashy and glam flair. And that tiny corseted waist! I always agreed that Elvira ripped off her act and style, too bad the courts didn't see it that way when Vampira sued her. But she was a cult icon, can't argue there.
Well here are the details:
December 21, 1921 January 10, 2008
P.S. I've noticed on many many websites that people think that this woman is Vampira (link). Nope. That is actress Lisa Marie acting as Vampira for Tim Burton's film Ed Wood (link).
This is the prop couch in the picture that Lisa Marie recently sold in LA (via an ad in Craigslist, and I can't believe I freaking missed it), it was designed by her then-boyfriend Tim Burton (link).
Look at the facial features. Vast differences obviously. I know nobody will read this but I feel better. I don't understand how real fans couldn't tell one woman from the other. The mind wobbles.
Here if you can pick out the one and only Vampira you can have a cookie.
